Achtung - Panzer!

Neil Sneade

The Cambridge South 3rds blitzkrieg continued to steamroller everything in its path with a hard fought opening league victory against City of Peterborough 7ths. Led by Field Marshall Sneade (aka the Astroturf Fox), the 3rds juggernaut crossed the border and conducted a devastating invasion of Poland. I mean Peterborough.

Against a capable and pacey Peterborough side, South were guilty of starting the match sitting too deep, allowing Peterborough to press the play into the South half. Despite being on the defensive for much of the first period the South defence held firm, goalie Jon Price only being called into action to make saves from a couple of short corners.

With a couple of new players in the side, South were taking time to find their rhythm but gradually came into the game and began to put pressure on the Peterborough goal, forcing several short corners of their own. With half time approaching, South unleashed their heavy howitzer, aka James Cobbe, who carried the ball across the top of the D before cracking a shot into the bottom right corner to give South the lead at the interval.

Stung by the reversal, Peterborough launched a strong offensive across a broad front to try and regain the initiative. South were continuing to make dangerous counterattacks however, with James Pope doing good work in midfield in his first game for the club and Michael and Simon working hard on the right and up front. Continued pressure from Peterborough resulted in South having to defend a succession of short corners.

South's Obergrupenfuhrer now rallied his troops for the final big push. With James P and Russ in the centre, supported by the rest of the team, working hard to close down the play and pressure the opposition, South's attacks were looking more dangerous. Played in by an excellent ball from Russ, Simon's pace almost got him clear through on goal before a flying kamikaze lunge way outside his area from the Peterborough goalie saw the ball swept to safety.

It proved only a temporary escape for Peterborough, when shortly afterwards some tight play in the Peterborough D finished with John H netting to extend South's lead. Further attacking waves from South finally saw the Peterborough line collapse as Simon sealed the victory with his fourth goal of the season. A close fought match that was in the balance until close to the end.
