Last gasp winner for South 5s
Tom CrellenIn the end, it all came down to a single moment. With seconds left on the clock, South pressed forwards. The ball was pushed into the opponents’ D from the right hand side, bouncing and bobbling under sticks, and was knocked by Vincent left finding its way to Alec. Controlling the ball with reverse stick, Alec looked up at the opposing goal. The Bourne Deepen keeper loomed large in fluorescent yellow. As Alec steadied himself and pushed the ball towards the far post, time seemed to slow down. The keeper lunged; defenders stretched and jabbed their sticks; the South attackers held their collective breath. With a satisfying thud the shot made its mark. Seconds later Jay Jay blew the whistle and it was all over. Lucky? Perhaps. But great teams sometimes make their own luck.
The preceding 69 minutes saw Bourne Deepening take the lead in the first half with a neat drag flick from a short corner. After a shaky start, South began to press, only to find the opposing keeper on excellent form blocking a number of shots and short corner flicks. South equalised in the second half after a deft swivel by Rob, still sporting hip version 1.0, directed the ball into the left corner. As the minutes wore on, the team needed a hero. Alec was an unlikely match winner, having never previously scored and earlier kicking the ball as he was subbed on (all but guaranteeing the lemon vote). But the game had one final twist.
Other notable mentions; Stu Creed returning strongly from injury, Alan a formidable rock in defence, Tom C final game (possibly).
