Early rise to the fens we go….

Emily Bird

The 3s& time had come to make the long trek out to Wisbech this week. Our previous encounter this season had seen us win 4-2. After this defeat, we knew Wisbech would be out for a win on home turf. But went out determined as we were aware a win was needed.

The first half started with some great play by the midfield, with some great passing and tackles from Tabs, Bethan, Emma and Anna. Emma in centre mid helped keep the whole team in position and made sure our press was effective. This worked well and we managed to keep a good amount of the possession during the half. However, Wisbech were definitely taking their free hits and 16s quick so we needed to be too. The game was close through the half and saw the score tied at 0-0 at half time.

Half time came with lots of positive feedback, with Lucy saying we should be more assertive on the ball and to up the communication. We also noted that Wisbech were playing around us in triangles so we needed to intercept those balls. This was definitely seen when we came out in the second half. Five minutes into the half, some amazing triangles up the pitch led to several team opportunities in the D. This led to Emma scoring, putting South ahead by making the score 1-0. However, this rattled the Wisbech team. As the half continued it saw Wisbech have short corner after short corner. There were so many I lost track of the number. Although frustrated, we managed to keep our cool. With 10 minutes to go it was still 1-0. After a 16 and once again some great simple hockey, the ball was passed up the pitch to Tess. The ball was run into the D and passed across in front of the keeper who managed to get her stick on it. However, Steph was right there to pick up the rebound and after passing to Emily B, she scored making the final score 2-0.

POM votes saw nominations Emma, Anne, Hannah, Lucy and Steph. However POM was award to Tabs for being excellent down the wing and battling hard throughout for the ball in midfield. LOM went to Anne. LOM vote this week was much more unanimous with almost everyone voting for Hannah and Anne after Anne ran into Hannah and they both collided in the defending D ending up in a pile on the floor.

We very much look forward to our return to our beloved Long Road pitch as we play Bourne.
