The 2s are back

A league match on a Sunday you might ask…well that was due to Uni not having any students on the 26th when our game was meant to be played so they asked to move it.

We started in the changing rooms and warmed up as a team. It was time to get out mojo back. Jess was already told she would be awarded lemon before the game even started, so the freedom was hers to do anything.

We were coming out fighting after the last two losses with music on loud and team-work being strong. Jenny made sure we got our ankles warmed up so we could have fun.

They turned up on their away kit, as they had a match in home kit the day before and, being students, couldn’t clean it in time, so there was a clash of tops and they had to change into white. Once this was sorted, we began!

Uni got a goal in the first 5 mins, despite some great defending they managed to get it past the keeper with a well worked corner. Not much you can do with those. 2nd goal was unlucky and managed to sneak past our keeper. 2-0 down: We kept our heads up and dug in.

Brace yourself - the next excitement happened in 6 minutes. Dani scored our first goal from well work passing and drive into the D, straight strike bottom left…1-2.

Next, we transferred the ball and worked as a team like we are known to do, passing in triangles around the Uni players. A huge run from Jess and Rhi shouting “Jess” led to our second goal. She waited, went round the keeper, saw Tiff in front of goal who made sure she got it in, it a great goal…2-2. Cheers from our wonderful supporters were heard (Izzy, Alice, Kate, Adam, Rachel’s parent, Guy and Dex - thank you).

Then in the next minute there were some excellent runs up the wings by Rachel, Anna and Charlotte with some solid support in the middle from Jenny and Niamh. Dani passed to Jess who drove to the baseline, found Rebecca who made a lovely shot…GOAL! More cheers, excitement and a few subs happened….3-2.

A team chat at half time, calmed our excitement but made us realise that we could do this. Passing into space, helping cover players and reading play was what would cause us to win this game.

There was great communication in defence, closing down any further atempts on goal with Cassie making some crucial saves.  Uni were awarded a short corner which defended in earnest.

We were passing creating a lot of opportunities for ourselves with Liandi, Rhi, Jess, Katie and Feline making wonderful runs. Our press was stronger and we were reading their play closing them down. We were crossing the ball into the D (one of which deflection of a defenders stick and ended in a dramatic fall from Jess but she was protecting her face) and spending 80% of the 2nd in their half, but no goals. In the last 2 minutes we returned possessions, whistle blew, WIN! The 2nds are back, coming from 2-0 down to winning 3-2 and holding onto that lead into the 2nd half - that is what we do! A wonderful game!

Unfortunately there were no teas, so we had flapjack and biscotti (thanks Dani & Jenny). There were a few lemon worthy moments but Jess had about 6 reasons as to why she should get it (ask Rhi) [Ed - this is multiplying as the citation only mentions 4!]. Anna was awarded for strong defending and a wonderful debut. A huge team effort and way to end the weekend on a high.
