Singleton Gets the Upper Hand

Neil Sneade

After a hard-fought draw against a higher division Ely side last weekend, Cambridge South 3rds got back to winning ways with a convincing victory against St Neots 5ths on Saturday.

Having already beaten St Neots at home twice this season, South were feeling confident for their first away fixture of 2007. This confidence looked to be well-founded when South scored less than two minutes into the game with the first attack of their match, the ball falling to Colin Singleton who scored his first goal for South with a lifted shot into the top right corner of the goal.

South continued to dominate the play in the first period, Simon Ta scoring South's second goal midway through the first half. As half time approached another South attack saw centre back Neil Sneade in an advanced position to thread a pass through a crowded D for Simon to sweep in the simplest of chances at the left hand post.

In the second half South continued to look the most likely to score before a short corner gave St Neots the opportunity to pull a goal back. South responded by pressing the play ever further into the St Neots half, with Wilco Dijkstra, Colin and Mark Jackson dominating the midfield and Joe Williamson firing in crosses from the right wing. The away side's pressure was finally rewarded when the ball broke to Colin in the D and, with time and space to pick his spot, he made no mistake with another undercut shot past the keeper's left hand.

A comfortable victory for South that bodes well for the resumption of the league season next Saturday.
