Welcoming March in February
Neil SneadeThe Cambridge South goal machine cranked back up into action this week with a convincing 5-1 victory over a March side that had run us close in the corresponding away fixture before going down 2-1. The rain that had been falling all day had eased by push-back and the match started brightly, with good play from both sides. March's defence was being organised very effectively by their skillful young captain while for South, Wilco Dijkstra, Colin Singleton and Neil Sneade were winning lots of ball in midfield.
After the early exchanges, some good midfield interplay and triangular passing to the wings from South began to create an edge. Although the contest remained tight, South were looking the more dangerous and, shortly before the quarter hour mark, took the lead when Dave Stock slipped a ball through for Simon Ta to jab home.
Having got the breakthrough, South pressed home their advantage and good breaks down the right from Michael Woolley and John Horsley led to two further goals for South before half time, both taken by left-winger Tom Rosselli coming in at the far post to sweep in breaking loose balls at close range.
A tight contest was being swung by South's greater potency on the break and in attack. March still weren't ready to crumble though, as they showed after the break with some good attacks that had South scrambling to clear. As the match entered the final quarter South remained in control but with no further score. The frustration was clearly getting to some of the March players and their captain was cautioned after repeated infractions.
Taking advantage of the distracted March side, South scored twice in quick succession when harrying and pressure from South's forwards resulted in defensive errors, allowing Simon Ta to poke two more goals past the St Ives keeper and seal his hatrick. The gloss was only slightly taken off the result by a late goal conceded by South twelve seconds from time when, guilty of switching into exhibition mode against a dispirited March, a March break was not covered and a soft shot was allowed to creep between a defender and the keeper.
Overall though, a good result that keeps the pressure on Peterborough.
