Men's 1sts lose to St Ives 1

Cambridge South, proudly sponsored by PwC, came within a whisker of taking points off St Ives, a team on a thirteen-match winning run.

The away side were reinforced with a number of regulars returning to take their place in the side. This included the inspirational midfield pairing of skipper Chris Baker and Mike Thorogood, and the heart of the defence Jim Thorpe and Chris Graveling. It didn't take long for the away side to stamp their authority on the game with some neat passing moves and intelligent movement from the front line of Lukas Snetler and Kevin Rowland.

A tight first half was interrupted with a goal by Chris Baker, scoring a flick at the second attempt (the first go was ruled out as he hadn't waited for the Umpire to whistle). St Ives are nothing if not difficult to beat, though, and they came back strongly to equalise before the break courtesy of a deflected shot off Rupert Webb's stick.

The second half continued in the same vein with the away side looking comfortable in defence, debutant Leo Tomita showing good distribution of the ball from left back, but finding it difficult to break through the home rearguard, despite a number of short corners being awarded. Fellow debutant Simon Ta settled in to the side well up front and caused problems for the home defence, but as the game wore on St Ives looked the more likely to grab the winner and eventually they got a second goal - this time from a jinking run through midfield. This was followed up by a thoroughly professional last ten minutes, when the hosts held possession and kept South at arms length to secure the victory. Teams are not top of tables for nothing, though when one on such a long winning run as St Ives currently are say "What we have, we hold", it could be argued to be something of a moral victory for their opposition.

Captain Chris Baker commented, "What the hell is this match report all about? Obviously this reporter was never at the game - he's got all the crucial details wrong. In fact, I don't even remember saying these words! I'm off to grab my lifejacket for some water polo". Well, indeed sir.
