Men's 3rds lose to Royston 4
The first game of the season saw an enthusiastic Royston side edge past Cambridge South 3rds, sponsored by PwC, in the final minutes as lack of fitness was revealed.
CSouth scored first as man of the match Steve Fleck shot powerfully at the outstanding (ex-first team) Royston keeper, only for the lurking John Greaves to get the slightest deflection to turn the ball in to the net.
Royston came back strongly after half time with two goals, outmuscling the defence, giving new keeper Shahbaz Ali no chance. Shahbaz was otherwise calm and solid in spite of a sprained wrist, and made a number of essential saves - not as many as the Royston keeper who saved repeatedly form Greaves, Fleck, Barton and Ta. CSouth grabbed the equaliser after a goalmouth scramble from Rob Barton, but this wasn't enough, and Royston scored twice in the final minutes.
Notable performances came from the lively Steve McCulloch in midfield, and James Bridge at sweeper - who got a bloody face from an accidental clash for his efforts - and CSouth had their moments, but overall Royston showed better discipline and coherence as a team and were worthy winners.
