Men's 3rds beat Wisbech Town 4

A filthy day didn’t prevent Cambridge South 3rds, sponsored by PwC, from gaining their best league win of the season to date against promotion rivals Wisbech 4ths.

From the start the goals rained in (sorry), as the home team notched up 5 in the first half. Skipper John Greaves grabbed the first two early in the game, one with a typical poacher's style pouncing on a loose ball close to goal, and a second through the old GreavesLewis short corner routine, with Greaves loitering by the near post after sending the corner out to Andy Lewis to fire back to him for a neat deflection. Paul South then rolled a deceptive effort past a baffled defence for the third; he then turned provider with a shot on to a post that James Cobbe turned in. Wisbech got a goal back from an excellent move ending with an unstoppable deflection, but CSouth didn’t let this distract them from further success, this time Rupert Espley getting a deserved goal for all his harrying and fine midfield play with a deft flick just before half time.

After the break the defenders were keen to get in on the act, and the best goal of the game was scored by Andy Lewis, ghosting in at the far post to pick up a pin point accurate Ron Oren cross-field ball for the 6th goal. Although Wisbech were quite dangerous in attack, and had some canny experienced defenders, CSouth were able to turn defence into attack by using the width of the pitch, and varying their moves, helped by the midfield controlling the central area and distributing well. John Greaves provided the assist as he picked up the ball on the penalty spot with his back to goal, and passed it out to Paul South at the top of the D to grab his second of the game. Greaves clinched his second hattrick in two weeks with a reverse stick flick into the far corner soon afterwards.

By this time CSouth were coasting, and Wisbech made them pay by capitalising on sloppy defending to get their second goal, but this was not enough to stop a convincing victory which put CSouth 3rds equal on points to the league leaders with only a goal difference inferior by 1 goal separating them from the top spot.
