A hard fought clean sheet for south
Matt NeedI turned up on Voi (first time - very exciting - lots of fun - highly recommend!) ready for what can only be described as a highly manufactured call up to the threes. I turned up earlier than I ever had for a match in the hopes of watching some good high level hockey from the 1s (this definitely happened), and a tactical whiteboard session (this did happen after a lengthy delay). At 4:30, we were ready to pushback and the heavens opened. What we thought was going to be a cake walk, immediately turned into a wet, sloppy mess. St Ives started strongly but after 5 minutes, we adjusted to the conditions and began to create a few chances. After winning a short, George slapped it across the D and Menzies deflected it above the keeper - 1-0 South. South continued to build up confidence and were playing the better hockey but the ball couldn’t quite find the back of the net. That was until Joe capitalised on a goal-mouth scramble with a well executed volley. It was at this point, on the stroke after half time, that the lemon-like nature of Toms performance began to emerge. After the whistle blew for a free hit, he pinged the ball down the other end of the pitch. After some brief debating, the green card was shown and he trudged off the pitch.
Half-time came and went, Menzies got a second with calm and collected finish, a number of chances came and went (Seb kept a tally on the sideline as per coaches orders) and Tom continued to ping the ball off the side of the pitch, away from players. All in all, a good winning performance and a sigh of relief after the disappointment of last weekend. Final score a 3-0 win.
Edit: I may have done the wrong game here, but what do you expect when voted lemon for a game you didn’t play in. From what I hear the 4s dominated the first half, going in 1-0 up after a good finish from new find Charlie. The domination however began to fade, despite some excellent defensive work from Danny amongst others. Final score, a 3-1 loss.
