The league begins!
Lou WalkerHow many going to St Ives? Umm … only 11. Including some L5s kindly doubling up after their earlier match. At least it was a good run around for everyone. Charlotte Cartwright gave us some nerves by arriving just 2 mins before push back, earning her first Lemon award. Then we were off! Despite this being her second game of the day, Louisa Pimblett took on the energetic central midfield position, and worked her socks off to win and distribute the ball. We held St Ives at bay for quite some time, via some excellent goalkeeping from Sélène Stoop (a close contender for PoM) and some excellent work in defence by Laura Edge and Vinnie Henderson. Excellent tackles and defensive hit outs by Vinnie made her another close contender for PoM. However, the award went to May McCool playing at defensive mid, who ran her socks off and was always well positioned to support team mates. Sadly St Ives eventually breached our defence and scored a skilful goal, followed by another off a short corner, ending the first half with South 2-0 down.
Our forward line of Nicky Perry, Ceri Richardson and Charlotte White were working well together, and Charlotte’s goal resulted from some great team play as they moved the ball up the field between them, finishing in a nice diagonal pass from Nicky that Charlotte whacked in from near the right post. Unfortunately St Ives reclaimed their 2 goal lead after a slightly scrappy goal that was shuffled in via a South foot (umpire declared it would have been a flick if it hadn’t gone in!). The game ended on a short corner for South, with everyone up for the last push. Frustratingly, the final strike went just wide of the post and the game ended 3-1. However, everyone was a winner when it came to teas (or, given the late finish time, let’s call it dinner) – sausage rolls, chips and beans, yum!
