Over the Fens and far away
Lou WalkerWe were down to just 12 again this week – evidently everyone had seen through Louise’s attempt to promote Wisbech as being ‘the jewel of the fens’ and a must-see place.
There was some excellent movement and triangular passing up front, between forwards Nicky, Eleanor and Char W. The ball went into the net a couple of times, but in both cases the goal was disallowed as the umpire had spotted a foul leading up to it.
The 6s are settling in well to our new formation, and there was good use of our width from 16 hit-outs, passing out and around the back. The midfielders worked hard, with Lottie F and May also receiving PoM votes for their commitment and determination. Lottie was everywhere, tackling left right and centre, and didn’t give up even after getting whacked on the hand twice.
The defense also worked really hard, mopping up Wisbech attacks with well-timed tackles and clearances. Unfortunately, as we tired a little, there were a few occasions where the midfield couldn’t get back quick enough to provide the support they needed, which allowed Wisbech to overload our D. At one point, poor Ruth was left facing a 3 on 1 situation which she somehow dealt with and they didn’t score on that occasion. Claire pulled off some beautiful saves, including impressively batting a ball away through the air with her pad, and some nice covering of the posts.
There was some aggressive stick tackling from Wisbech, which saw two of their players getting green cards in the first half, but sadly South didn’t manage to capitalise on the 1-player advantage whilst we had it.
Wisbech once again lived up to their reputation as one of the best match-teas providers in this league – curry, rice and home-made marble cake.
This week’s Lemon vote went to the iZettle machine which decided to go on strike again, prompting uncharacteristic language from Louise, and forcing us all back to the old-school way of paying our match fees in cash.
