M5 4-1 Ely City Mens 2
Matt Withington
Coming into this game the 5ths had one clear goal in mind make it 9 points from 3 games a very achievable feat considering our previous seasons' record against this Ely side.
The 5ths started this plan remarkably well with a dominant first 15 which lead to a goal from Jordan Bennet to open the scoring.
We thought had this game under control.
However, all was not well as not 5 minutes later the gods felt they would punish our hubris, as a stunning defensive interception by yours truly failed to take account of Ely's slow pitch, as I went one way and the ball remained exactly where it was propped up nicely for Ely's attacking centre forward, who promptly played it around the keeper to level the game 1-1. The shame
From there the 5ths rode out the half aggrieved but still believing that 3 points were very much possible.
Eventually mid-way through the second half, the ball found its way to Roland in midfield, who decided he had enough of this cagey close game affair and went on to dribble around all 4 players in Ely’s backline before putting away a fabulous solo goal to make it 1-2.
From there, any semblance of resistance collapsed allowing Rob to sniff away at the back post until he came up with a goal to make it 1-3 and put the game out of sight.
A final goal from Jordan walker just before the end of the game made it 1-4 to round off a good days work and secure 3 points
