Remember remember*.... (*Not to leave water bottles on the wrong side of the pitch)
Polly LockyerFollowing a frustrating loss against Cambridge City 6s last weekend, the team assembled on this damp Saturday afternoon with renewed spirit ready to take on the next opposition, Spalding L3s.
Following a dynamic warm up (Rosie had many chickens to feed and a whole mens hockey team to herd off the pitch) we took to our starting line-up and the game began. Spalding were putting us through our paces, but we pushed back and within the first 10 minutes Sarah picked up a feed from Louisa on the right post and wiggled the ball past the keeper - 1-0! A hopeful beginning but we remembered that this was how last week’s game started, and we weren't about to relax just yet.
This paid off, and within the next 10 minutes, a ball was set up beautifully for Holly Diggins who picked it up from the edge of the (almost empty) D and made a strike. 2-0 up!
However, the remainder of the first half saw two goals from Spalding, despite many spectacular saves from Cassie, so by half time we were back to a level playing field. Could have been worse!
During her time subbed off, Rosie recruited a few spectators to help carry all of our coats and water bottles from the wrong side of the pitch (where they had been left unknowing of a new system to make smooth transitions of teams between matches) to bring them to thirsty and cold team mates who were subbed off. Alas, this was against the rules and her very helpful efforts were sadly disallowed by the umpire, gaining her the lemon vote for the week (although we decided this should really be a combined POM and LOM - PLOM if you will - vote for her selfless efforts as well as stellar defensive work). Rosie you are our hero!
A well fought, challenging second half with both teams pushing for their winning goal saw some lovely game play from South, however, no more goals were scored by either team, and the game ended on a round 2-2 draw. An improvement. Maybe next week we will continue this trajectory with a win! But let's not jinx it…
POM this week was a three way tie, to Rosie for great tackling and composure on the ball, to Harry for her fantastic passes, and of course, for 'that' reverse dink beautifully and skilfully navigating Spalding’s press, and to Louisa for working tirelessly in midfield with some lovely weaves around Spalding and for being motivational… ('reasonable shouting').
Louisa Pimblett
For being everywhere at all times and some lovely maneuvers and skills in midfield.
Harry Lusty
Fantastic passes feeding into midfield and forward, and of course, for 'that' reverse dink.
Rosie Brown
The Bag queen lady herself...forever helpful! Assisted by coach Chris, supporters Helen and a dad. Team lemon. For stopping play to move bags from one pitch side to the other (distracting play and unsafe) tut tut.
