RUN BECKY!
Phoebe MorganYou may have thought the title related to the game but in fact relates to the lateness of some of our team. Don't worry guys we still like you, luckily for you Nicole had some great LOM moments to save you...more to follow on that.
10:30 push back at Long Road is not a favourable one relating to your warm-up. Following on straight from the juniors means moving all the goals well off the pitch and in itself counts as a full body warm up. The actual warm up then began with balls flying everywhere and none towards the correct goal. With Pelicans looking on they probably thought we were going to be a walk over but after a pep talk from Izzy on the side telling us we can play hockey we all became focused.
A frantic 5 minutes commenced the match with Pelicans attacking strong and congesting the middle. Once South had realised the middle was not the best route and speed was on our side we got our first goal. A pass to Connie who ran the ball towards the D and then passed to Cat secured South with the opening lead 1-0 just 6 minutes in.
South settled into the game and the attacking chances kept coming. Before more subs could be made South had a second goal, curiosity of Cat again! Another excellent field goal. 15 minutes in South 2-0 Pelicans.
Pelicans had made some attacking phases of play and received a couple of shorts. With South's defensive short corner team running out and adding pressure to Pelicans. Many short corner chances were saved but unfortunately one took a deflection of a defenders stick and the ball landing in the goal just above the backboard. The half finished. South 2-1 Pelicans.
A quick team talk at half time and a variety of sweets had re-energised South and we were ready to add more goals to your side of the score sheet.
In both sides of the game, South made great progress with strong presses once in place. Leaving the Pelicans defenders hit ours becoming trapped around the line of the 23 meaning South was ready to attack. Even when the ball had managed to get through the first line of the press South were quick to react and the midfields often picked off any start balls. With quick counter attacks comin from Becky, Hannah and Katy to name a few.
While Cat had dominated the first half of the game adding to the score sheet twice it was now time for another South member to do the same. Welcome Naomi.
Just 5 minutes into the second half, a South ball in the D collided with a Pelicans foot and a short awarded. Souths short corner routine has developed massively over the past few weeks, each time going from strength to strength. This was no exception. GOAL! There was some confusion on who had got this goal a beautiful effort from Becky saw the ball fired towards the goal but a sneaky deflection from Naomi sealed the deal. South 3-1 Pelicans.
Another Pelicans corner gave a scare to the South defence but amazing work from the defence on the injectors post sent the ball out of the D.
There was only one more goal to be added to the score sheet...another for South and another for Naomi. A beautiful field goal to polish off the score for that day.
Personally I think South could have had more goals, Pelicans keeper was one of the best I think we have played this season...but not good enough to keep us out everytime!
Our winner of this week's POM was (drumroll please) was Cat closely followed by Connie.
Our LOM...there could only be one this week. Nicole, if the first mistake of falling into the goal on the side of the pitch while watching the action wasn't a good enough reason...trying to sub on without your stick definitely secured everyone's vote for you to be LOM.
Nicole Mills
For falling into the goal on the sideline and subbing herself back on without her stick
