We won the second half

Holly Diggins

It was a very windy and early start for the L5s this Saturday. After optimistically saying we looked like a strong squad this week, we had a last minute change due to injury. It wouldn't be a L5s match without a last minute switcheroo of positions!

The first half started and South took a minute of two to get used to the new positions. St Neots started strong and had good pace making our defence work hard. Rosie and Julie were as solid as ever at the back making it hard for St Neots to get in our D. But they did break and scored a pretty good goal from open play. Mid way through the first half the heavens opened with what can only be described as sideways rain. This made it hard for our midfields and forwards to stay on their feet and gave the pitch/weather the deserved title of 'LOM' this week. In the awful weather Zoe made some incredible saves. After some more slipping and struggling to see the ball, South gave away a short which St Neots managed to put away! A frustrating 2-0 lead.

The rain stopped and we were feeling optimistic at half time that we were still in with a chance of drawing this game back. The second half started and something switched, South were playing gorgeous hockey creating the space we needed to give ourselves a real chance. Harry, Vicky, Polly and Louisa were making some beautiful passes down to the forwards and it wasn't long until we won ourselves a short. A textbook short corner saw Helen slip if left giving Louisa a perfect strike on goal, 2-1! Full of optimism, there were lots of other shots on goal in the second half from Sarah, Becky, Helen and Holly but the St Neots keeper was a bit too good! Annabel made some fantastic runs forward to offer goal scoring opportunities too but we just couldn't get round the keeper before the final whistle blew.

When St Neots broke through a few times we could always rely on Lauren sprinting after them and claiming the ball back, well deserved POM for putting 100% in all match. Overall, it was a really close game and South deserved to come away with a point at least. We are taking lots of positives away from the game and are happy we won the second half!
