How to play hockey and be a queen
Erin WeatherstoneWe started off in great spirits on the back of our win against long Sutton a couple of weeks ago We knew this would be quite a physical match given our past experiences playing against Newmarket (Suzi knows all too well) but we were up for a challenge!
Coach Tim by the sidelines and our goals set for the day it was time for pushback! Unfortunately Newmarket managed to sneak an early goal past us from a short corner but we were not deterred. We kept our formation well and put into good use some triangle passes (we just love triangles, especially me). We were all working hard everywhere on the pitch but sadly Newmarket got a second goal. Shortly after this the game had to be put on hold as Luisa took an unfortunate ball to the face at high speed (we hope you get better soon Luisa!!). After some first aid pitchside (I knew there was a reason I went to medical school) and our team cheerleader turned medical assistant Hannah escorting Luisa to Addenbrooke’s the game resumed. Not wanting to let Luisa down we kickstarted back into action with some beautiful play down the pitch resulting in a wonderful goal from Emily B!
After what felt like the longest half in the history of hockey it was half-time!
I have to say the second half was a blur and I can’t really remember the exact details. There were some more goals from Newmarket. We were also dropping like flies with injuries and cramp taking hold of the majority of the team at various points. The crowning moment of all these injuries came at the end of the match where I had to be carried off the pitch like a Queen for having the worst cramp of my life. The royal family would be proud of the drama this created and earned me LOM for the second week in a row. Queens don’t walk off the pitch they get carried.
POM went jointly to Lydia and Hayley. Lydia was honestly amazing making saves left right and centre. Hayley was non stop all over the pitch just being all round incredible.
Final score 5-1 to Newmarket. Overall a challenging game for the L3s but we did our best under extreme circumstances with lots of positives to take away!
