Vs Wisbech 2s
Becky DonaldsonWisbech is a long way away. With most of us (sorry Mo) having survived the bumpy drive relatively unscathed, we arrived to Wisbech with the sun making a good attempt to burn through the cloud. When we played Wisbech at home we won 3-0, but Wisbech been doing well recently and had a large home advantage from a slow pitch, so we knew this game would be challenging.
Wisbech started very strong and got the ball in the goal within the first few minutes. It however was disallowed as it had hit one of our players on the line, a penalty flick was awarded. Zoe got an excellent touch on it but unfortunately they scored.
Wisbech continued to be dominant in the first half with Zoe making some excellent saves (including one where she saved the third rebound as she turned around from the previous save). A couple of lucky umpiring decisions also helped. We broke free of their half and Cat did an excellent run and shot on goal to bring it to 1-1. Rumour has it she’s a strong contender for goal queen.
Wisbech came back strong with some great jab tackles with our defenders doing well.
Shree, Daisy and Hannah did an excellent job of keeping the ball in the middle – running up and down in a game that often went end to end. A back line run and an excellent finish from Mo put us 2-1 up at half time.
In the first 5 minutes of the second half a chaotic goal from Mo and Naomi put us 3-1 up. We knew Wisbech would come back strong – their coach was very vocal on the sidelines. We channelled Ed and Izzy’s words on game management, and did calm, risk-averse passes to each other. We kept it up our end and managed another few shots on goal which just didn’t quite go in. This worked well… until the last 5 minutes of the game.
Wisbech broke through our nice, calm passing plan and scored from a short corner. 3-3. Then our calm demeanour kind of crumpled and despite valiant efforts from Nicky, Vicky and Ginny they just managed to scrape one past Zoe to make it 4-3 before the whistle blew.
It was a frustrating end to a great game where our domination of the second half just didn’t bear fruit. Shree earned a well-deserved POM for keeping up with Wisbech’s quick passes and having the speed to chase them down from top of the diamond. I made a strong attempt at lemon for forgetting to change one of my shoes when we arrived. Had Hannah not noticed, I would’ve gone on with odd shoes :’) However, Mo secured her place as lemon with a “I’ve reverted to my childhood car sickness” speedy chun on the bumpy Roman roads.
Mo Hall
Vom for this LOM (poor carsick Mo) - with a shoutout to Becky who wore two different shoes (one yellow and one black)
