M2 4-0 Cambridge University Mens 3

Dave Aston

South took to the field against the Uni keen to avenge the defeat from earlier in the season.

After a lecture in the pre-match warmup about the need to press aggressively (“Uni-d to get two or three cards a season if you’re defending properly”), South started the game strongly with great switching the play round the back, and fantastic energetic runs from the midfield and forwards.

After sweeping his previous Richer pass straight off the side-line, Aston decided to embark on a mazy dribble up the left wing, engaging two to three of the Uni defenders.  Credit at this point must go to Hockley, who instead of displaying the natural reaction to such a play which would be to put his head in his hands in despair, he instead took the ball off his teammate and rounded the keeper to slot in for one nil.  He was always an optimist was Jim!

South soaked up some Uni pressure as the half wore on, with the highlight of this being Dimi’s sprint back last ditch tackle to deny a dead certain away goal.  Having just watched this evening another class box to box match winning midfield performance, it appears appropriate at this point to say Dimi has really grown into the Hjobjerg role, well done the lad!

Just before half time, a classic aerial from Maz sent Henry through one on one with the keeper, and Henry calmly slapped the ball home to make it two nil, and continue his fine run of goalscoring form.

The second half continued as the first had finished, with South being very well organised, containing the speed of their opponents.  Pressure in and around the opposition D eventually told, with John West showing composure with two controlled near range finishes to put some gloss on the scoreline.  There was just time before the end for Rimmer to be given a sin bin for an overly strong tackle, much to the dismay of Jim who had been looking forward to an Aston clean sweep in the lemon voting ever since the team was announced!

All in all, a great team display, a lesson in how to give a controlled hockey performance.
