A day of rest we did not have

Rhian O'Connor

An away day to the great north (ish) of Long Sutton called for an early (ish) start, budgeting two whole hours for travel. A great decision by Jenny as collectively we as a team seem to be less than punctual. However, on this occasion, we arrived at Long Sutton with over an hour until push back, just in time to witness an interesting display of hockey from the previous match. A match which included one handed reverse stick hits and an overzealous player who’s “We. Cannot Rest.” attitude while sporting a deranged look in his eyes simultaneously tapping his temple furiously provided some pre-match entertainment. Although, this sentiment did do us well in the end.

Running slightly behind, despite there being only one match in front of ours, meant we needed to complete a speedy warm up to get in the zone. It was here where I firmly solidified my position as lemon of the match with a beautiful, what we have termed – thank you Jenny, as a squaerial over the boundary fence into a tree stump. Needless to say, my aerials still need a little ‘shaping’. Apologies for the loss of South property.

Despite Long Sutton being towards the bottom end of the table, they put up quite a challenge for our forwards who were shooting against a world cup standard goalkeeper! But that didn’t stop our first player of the match, Jess, as she managed to put two past the very skillful GK. The first goal showed Jess’ calm composure as she received a quick pass from me to somewhere around the P spot, she took her time and eventually managed to find the backboard. This was such a moment of relief for the whole team as we had been building up to this for what seemed like an age.

The second goal was one born out of pure frustration in the last couple of minutes of the game. Jess received a cracking ball from Cait at the halfway line and ran it all the way to the right-hand side of the attacking D where she absolutely belted it past the keeper to everyone’s shock including Jess’. And with that the win was firmly in the bag.

Our second player of the match is Sophie, it’s clear to us that she doesn’t need her morning Weetabix (other brands are available) to run rings around the opposition. Her runs and triangles are a pleasure to behold, such a cool cucumber on the ball!

Overall, this was a fruitful jolly to Long Sutton, and a great game was had once again by the terrific 2’s (and friends).

A goal was scored distinctly not in slow motion!

Zoom zoom Sophie. Clearly doesn't need breakfast to run rings around the opposition

Losing south property (maybe it'll grow into a ball tree?)
