I had a dream...

Nev Warren

I have a dream today, that one day, on the green fields of Cambridge, the South 5th XI shall rise to greatness and conquer their opponents with courage and determination.

Yes, we have faced many challenges on this journey. We have missed numerous opportunities, but we have never lost faith in our abilities. In the first half, after much perseverance, Rob B outmuscled the St Ives’ back line and scored a crucial goal, carrying a narrow lead into the half-time break.

And let me tell you about Jan, who stayed and supported from the side-lines, reminding us that we don't need to shout at each other to win. And who can forget the highlight of the first half, when Huw T lambasted Bertie B at a high octave, "Bertie defend!"

But the second half was a different story. The holy trinity of Peter F, James T and Kieran B dominated proceedings and roared forward at every opportunity. Rob Barton dispatched a hard short corner at an angle to put some daylight between the teams. Roland L’s light bursts from Defensive-Centre-Mid carved the third for Nev W to make sure from inches off the line. And the age-defying Martin Luther- Bartonez scored a hat-trick effort that left us in awe.

Peter F decided to smash another short-corner home before gaining a well-deserved rest for a foul under the umpire's eye. And although we had several more chances, it was Jo Dant who did his level best to try and concede at the death, but fortune kept his clean sheet intact.

And so, my fellow players, as we celebrate this victory, let us remember the words of Rob B, who saluted his team by bestowing beverages and strange tales of improbable dreams. Yes, he had a dream, a dream that we can all share, that one day we shall rise up and conquer all that lies before us, with our heads held high and our hearts full of hope.
