And with that, the 22/23 season comes to an end.
Suzi PughWe finished last weekend thinking we were safe sitting in 8th... until Jan informed us on Saturday night a surprise win from Long Sutton actually put us in danger of relegation. We needed to win... the challenge? Top of the league, Kettering -who also wanted a win to secure promotion. Before the game, we were in high spirits, cheering everyone on the team sheet.
We went out fighting! Kettering asked why we were fighting so hard. One of us was perhaps a little too passionate as at half time, Kettering had a word with the umpires and Hannah got a telling off - apparently it's really intimidating if you scream at the opposition. We'd held them back in the first half and it was 0-0. We found out, we needed to win/draw or it would come down to goal difference. Unfortunately, Kettering got a goal in the second half. Both teams kept pushing, so much so a Kettering player tried to take Rhi out. Rhi appealed to the umpire with a demostration of what happened, accidentally taking the player out in return. We kept our heads high, played as a team and kept the goal difference to 1. Luckily the goal difference to Long Suttong was –27. So...
WE DID IT! CSHC L3s are officially* the best team** in Div2.
After the game, we were still in high spirits. Happy that we've shown ourselves to be a true Div2 team, giving top of the league a tough challenge and in the words of Tim 'making them look average'. The spirits may have been too high by the time we were in the Taj Tandoori as we got told off for being too rowdy... (although another table booed the mardy lady and told us to continue).
PoM went to me (Suzi - unsure how I've landed the match report writing here) for solid distribution from the middle. Although, this was by a vote and PoM nominations were spread across the whole team for an absolutely solid game.
LoM went to Tim - why? We wanted our favourite coach in the famous crotcheted lemon beany! Special mention to Hannah's vocals - we loved them... Kettering did not.
*Judging may be very biased
**In league position, no. In terms of 18 amazing players who have worked so hard to play fab hockey and made the season so much fun, absolutely.
Hannah Muncey
A wonderful vocal performance (subject to taste: Kettering did not approval)
