Winner winner, chilli dinner!
Nicky PerryMother’s Day morning, and ladies 5s were off the back of a tremendous, if not slightly unusual, Saturday team win! The Sun came out as we took to the field, 9 brave players were facing their second game of the weekend on mildly fatigued legs, but moral was running high and so was the energy of our fresh-faced four Sunday only players.
Only mildly confused by three chimneys on a roof top, our valiant captain had, for the first time we believe this year, won the toss! So we cleverly swapped ends to avoid sun in our eyes, and it paid off! Our first ten minutes looked spectacular; there was short, sharp passing and brilliant team play, and in the 8th minute came our first goal - finally put in the back of the net by Nicky (with a minor assist from a Peterborough player). Excited by an early lead the team came together to keep pushing and trialling the Peterborough defence.
However there was of course some push back from the opposition, break aways that were generally calmly dealt with by our sterling back line - Rosie, Becky, Julie and our two super-six-sub-ins Georgia and Ruth. However we must caveat our warm welcome when they declared our beloved lemony to be creepy after the match! Of course we are biased, but we think he is adorable and you can judge for yourself.
Anyway…back to the game, our midfields were working brilliantly to create plenty of chances and play continued with lots of pressure on the Peterborough goalie, before Holly deflected an Alex shwack to claim our second goal. Definitely one to celebrate! We must here also mention the lemon moment of the match which was a full on collision by the unstoppable “big G” who took no prisoners crashing through a Peterborough player who was absolutely momentarily flattened, fear not - both players came out unscathed but the incident was mightily dramatic and worthy of four lemon votes!
Shortly after the crash, Helen was able to show off in front of her family and scored a corker of a reverse stick goal assisted by a hard ball in from Sarah. We finished the first half comfortably 3-0 up, but we all knew we’d been in similar situations before so after some brilliant sweeties and a rallying half time talk with our captain and vice, we took to the field for the second half.
The second half, I’ll be honest is generally a bit of a blur. Some fantastic saves from super keeper Zoe on break throughs. There was plenty of ping-pong around the goal, with every single upfront and mid having a go at goal to no avail! At one point - Rosie decided to do a bit of bird spotting, only mildly frightening our captain, what a lovely red kite. Eyes on the game Rosie! Alex got a telling off for elbowing from the umpires, and an emergency Helicopter did put a brief stop to the game as no players could hear the whistle. There were 4 south short corners this half, two brilliantly saved by the keeper and a third won by a brave Holly being taken down by the defence! The final whistle went as we were rewarded the last short and so up came all the south players to have one more chance to find the net. It was not however to be! Yet South 5s were ecstatic to come away with a second win of the weekend and we were treated to a proper home cooked meal of 5 bean chilli, and chicken marinated in red wine and wrapped in bacon.
Man of the match votes went to Ruth, Georgia, Rosie, Harry and Helen and 3 for the whole team - the preview said it was now or never for the 5s, we choose now, hopefully it’s not too late!
