Wis-busy car park

Mo Hall

L4s were on the long haul journey for match day today - basically almost as long as Nic’s flight from San Diego the day before. Thankfully we all arrived on time and without any sick issues (no further comment).

For a place in the middle of nowhere, Wisbech made it their mission to have the smallest and busiest car park possible. This led to a rather difficult space finding situation. To the point where I (Mo) executed a beautiful reverse bay park, only when straightening up to run over the kit bag. I still blame Wisbech and their car park designer for this LOM-winning incident.

Anyway, onto the hockey. The sun was out, but it wasn’t 30 degrees. L4s were feeling positive and ready for a good game, and a good game it was, despite losing (spoiler alert). Our first half was filled with some excellent runs from Anna and Emily, some incredibly solid defending led by Ellie, Laurie, Elle and Nic, and some really lovely passing arounds from the midfield. We were attacking well, giving loads of good attempts of driving into the D and giving the goalie a good warm up. Thankfully this lovely play resulted in a textbook pass from the baseline from Anna to myself who managed to pop it in the goal from the P spot (hopefully Izzy and Ed will be proud).

L4s we’re ecstatic! We were 1:0 up. This good energy was kept up with Beth doing some beautiful runs up the midfield and some very near misses on posts (sorry guys). Wisbech, however, we’re good at picking up balls and getting down to our D, but thankfully goalie Selene was having none of it, including a memorable hi-5 save that I particularly loved. Unfortunately, a bit of a scuffed Wisbech play meant they scored ending it 1:1 at half time.

Once we’d restocked on hydration and glucose at half time, we went into the 2nd half optimistic. We continued the lovely play with passing back and lots of little triangles. Unfortunately Wisbech were fighting hard were keeping the defence busy. A major win from the match was no defensive short corners were called, showing how great we are at defending! Unfortunately, however, Wisbech managed to put 2 extra goals in the back of the net, that not even the amazing Selene could block. So that put us at 3:1 - not ideal.

However, South continued to have the drive to get back on top. The beckies, Shree, Liv and Beth giving the forwards lots of opportunities to score and playing lovely together. The amount of time and opportunities (have I said opportunities enough) we had in their attacking D was deserving of an eventual conversion. This did come, in like the last minute, with Emily doing a beautiful hit making it 3:2. The whistle went, but South were smiling.

For a team that is still yet to get used to each other, our play was really fab. I think we can all agree that when we play Wisbech next year, this is a very winnable game, considering how many attacking opportunities were had. Onwards and upwards to winning next time!!!

POM went to Selene for her fantastic goalie-ing. We had nominations for most of the team which reflects the brilliant team effort that happened today: Liv, Becky W, Emily, Ellie, Beth and Mo.

LOM of course went to me and the kit bag incident. Shree, Becks and Nic also got a vote, but I can’t remember why now as I was too busy taking a long hard look at myself for getting another LOM.

Well played everyone!
