Cambridge Ladies IVs v St Ives IIs
Anna WithingtonThe first half, despite hard work and lots of effort and some lovely runs up the pitch supported by strong defensive play, saw South struggle a little with our formation and to make those triangles we practiced at training. This allowed St Ives to play the ball around us and to net a few goals, but a lovely run from Beth with a finish to the top corner brought us a hard won goal and a half time score of 1-3.
The break at half time brought quantum sweets and wise words and the second half saw a stronger South, working to build through passing and link up play and with some great balls into space from our midfield and defenders - all helping to drive us into our attacking third with more vigor. More skillful play from Beth saw another run and killer finish and gave us another goal. They then scored from a short corner strike and for a while it looked like it might end with a disappointing 2-4 conclusion, until almost right on close, Liv kept her eye on a crossed ball to bash a South hard won third into the net. The end score of 3-4 to St Ives, and it felt a fairer reflection of the game, and hopefully a result which gives the team confidence for the games ahead. We’ve started the league against some of the stronger teams and have lost by narrow margins, so if we can bring the second half performance against St Ives into our games going forward, it feels like it will be cake not just pizza for tea quite soon…
Some worthy mentions from the game…Nic’s amazing stop on the line, Annabelle, Laurie and Bex for being our wounded heroes… POM votes went to Cat and Camille for some great play and excellent pickups but final title went to Beth for her great goals and match play, both in attack and defense. LOM votes went to Elly for being late for the midday meet, despite being at Long Road since 9… Shree had a good go at securing the title by thinking the score was 2-2 at half time… but Nic managed to surpass all efforts with the late washing of the shirts… [and hence the conclusion and forgive the poor pun here… ]
a slightly damp start but with a strong finish and one we should all be proud of :)

For washing last week’s spare tops on the morning of the match - they were refreshingly damp!
