L6s (+ some L5s) beat Newmarket (+ some L5s) to keep undefeated record
Hattie StanleyThis week the 6s generously welcomed the 5s to their game after the 5s' originally scheduled match was canceled at the last minute. The result was a friendly encounter against Newmarket's 3s development squad, which also featured some of the 5s players who stepped up for the game.
Despite the persistent rain, everyone was grateful for the opportunity to play.
The game kicked off with a south pushback, following some rearrangements due to Laura E's unexpected absence as she hadn’t realised the game was still on – earning her the overall lemon vote. Play was competitive but also a great opportunity to try out different techniques being a friendly. We even had Coach Chris’ daughters on the newmarket side showcasing their skills with impressive aerial passes.
One highlight of the game was Georgia's outstanding run. She skillfully maneuvered the ball from one end of the pitch to the other, preventing the opposition from getting close, setting up the forwards for a brilliant goal against Polly, who guarded the Newmarket goal. This incredible play earned Georgia the POM award.
The midfield players put in a strong effort against Newmarket's fast team. Rebecca also garnered several votes for the Player of the Match for her hard work and excellent tackles.
At half time, the score stood at an even 2-2, with a special mention going out to our remarkable goalkeeper, Harry. She made an incredible save on the very edge of her stick, denying a near-certain goal by a Newmarket forward. [Ed - Harry just needs to work on selling her saves now. More blasé 'well, obviously, I was always going to save that' and less of the wide-eyed shock 'how did I manage that?!?']
The defense worked tirelessly to keep the Newmarket attack at bay, with Ruth receiving numerous Player of the Match votes for her exceptional interceptions and well-executed hit-outs from the 16s.
Amid the game's many memorable moments, one quirky incident involved an abundance of worms on the pitch, which made playing in the rain a bit more challenging. However, the 2nd highest lemon vote ultimately went to Hattie for her stick-throwing antics following a long corner call. Whether it was intentional or merely an accident, we may never know!
The game concluded with a narrow 4-3 victory for the South side.
A big thank you to the South players who stepped in for Newmarket. Also, thanks to ChatGPT for coming to the rescue with this last-minute match report on a Sunday night!
