A tale of two Sophie’s

Sophie Dixon

A Sunday afternoon at Wilberforce Road against an unpredictable uni side set up a good game.
It didn’t get off to the best start when one of the umpires didn’t turn up. (I personally think he should have got lemon). But when he eventually arrived 10 minutes late and found a whistle we got underway.

Halfway through the first half Cait tactically took a uni player out of the game with a deflection from a short corner hitting the defender in the head. I think she’s learnt her lesson to always wear a mask.
Once hockey resumed a beautiful first time finish from Jess after a great run and ball from Sophie H was what put South 1 up. So after what felt like an endless first half it resulted at 1-0 to South.

Some motivating words from a wise Paul at half time set us on our way for the second half. Paul’s words however couldn’t stop Sophie D from falling over top D and earning some resounding laughs from the sideline (thanks Rhi) as well as several lemon votes.
But normal order was then resumed when Sophie H found herself up front and intercepted a poor transfer from uni. She was in on goal and slotted it between the keepers legs. 2-0!
A third goal then came when Sophie D dribbled into the D and passed it to Emily B who put it in the back of the net. 3-0!

Uni then decided to score from a short corner. Hayley learnt at this point that she’s needs some new astros. It was a slippery day. 3-1.
But we soon responded with a lovely goal from Emily B again, jumping in front of the keeper to get a touch on a ball in from Sophie H and secure the win for South. A great team performance from everyone playing some lovely hockey.

Overall a game that started with having trouble to distinguish the two Sophie’s, ended in one being MOM and one being LOM to make everyone’s lives easier!

Despite my lemon win, a special bright yellow lemon shout-out must go out to Captain Rebecca for ‘causing the club Halloween social to be rearranged so it wasn’t the night before our game, yet then going out Saturday night anyway’.

Well played everyone and what a sight the league table is this evening!!
