Three Eleanor's, two Rebecca's, and some menopausal chickens

Julie Sadler

From the first pushback we played some great hockey, keeping possession, passing back, and running for each other. St Ives were also playing well and it was a fast paced and fairly evenly matched game of hockey throughout. 0-0 at half-time (Rosie more LoM votes for a detailed explanation of the last play!) we were pretty happy with ourselves. In the second half unfortunately St Ives built the pressure and managed to score off a deflected short corner. Despite the team's best efforts an equaliser eluded us.

  • Boss Harry preferred to celebrate her birthday in Berlin instead of the exotic delights of St Ives, but made meticulous advance preparations for the match - thank you; we missed you!
  • Stand in captain Avi did an awesome job on the day.
  • Most of the team arrived in the changing rooms in good time, at which point it was pointed out to Rosie that she was wearing her shin pads the wrong way around - and she admitted she had been doing this for the last five years! (many LoM votes)
  • A highly entertaining warmup included feeding the chickens our way (thanks Fi - we missed you too!), Rebecca J telling us all about her flock of menopausal chickens, and some confusion over names with Elle, Ellie, and Eleanor all playing.
  • Helen arrived late (to be fair after a very busy morning), earning herself a LoM vote for causing Avi stress.
  • It was lovely to play with Nicky P again, just a shame she's now wearing a green shirt instead of purple (LoM vote).
  • Becky W made great interceptions, runs, and passes all game long, earning herself PoM votes
  • Avi showed her usual pace and eye for the ball, earning herself PoM votes
  • Polly and Lauren made some great runs linking with the forwards - Rittman, Helen, and Eleanor all ran hard to pressure the St Ives defence.
  • The defence didn't give St Ives any space; Rosie made some great tackes. fantastic passes round the back, and was so dedicated she was still playing on her knees (more LoM votes!), Rebecca, and Ellie made some great tackles, Julie made some interceptions, blocked a shot on the line, and had a few nice runs (PoM votes), Elle also had some nice runs and clearances.
  • Lou W in goal made several great saves (PoM votes).
  • Overall despite the loss it was still a great game played in a great spirit.
