Norwich or the Maldives?
Kate DixonOur following is increasing, we have people reading our reports from the heights of Lincolnshire and as far as the Maldives (classic Alice Wright).
Saturday 25th November away to Norwich. Only 1 point above us, and described by Jan as the biggest game in the clubs history…thanks for the nervous energy Jan.
The scene had been set, the hype, hyped and temperature dropped. We set out to put our stamp on the league, and where better to start our preparation than in a tiny changing room with aggressive heavy metal music playing.
Norwich Dragons weren’t fan of the heavy metal either, and quickly opted for a high school musical sing a long in the warm up. Much like Zac Effron, our heads were in the game but our hearts were in the short corners.
The nervous energy was building, and our captain of the ship insisted on patience and control. Patience and control was what she got.
Norwich Dragons put on the pressure, and had much of the possession in the first 15 minutes. South soaked up the pressure and denied many circle entires from the opposition, with our player of the match Jenny, channeling and putting in perfectly timed challenges stopping Dragons getting anywhere near the D. A solid defence continued during a series of short corners to Dragons, with Kim* overcoming her nightmare and making a goal saving stop on the line to deny Dragons once more. Dragons delivered little to no threat in the circle or on short corners, it was only an unfortunate deflection off a defenders foot that allowed them to go 1-0 up. Patience and control remained once more.
The second half came, but the threat from Dragons didn’t. Some would say it was the quality defence from South.
Much of the game continued in the middle of the pitch, or on the side line in the corner. Cue Kim encouraging me to aerial it. Cue me aerialling it into the crowd not once, but twice.
South’s solid defence remained unmoved, with all 11 players behind the ball. At this point our very own Terrier Kerryn had had enough, winning the ball in our own D and then making a Stella run up the pitch to gain a short corner. Plan A - Issy unleash her drag flick over Dragons tiny goal keeper.
Plan B - slip left
Hannah, we think intentionally chose plan B, allowing Alice to slot one into the netting before she jets off to the Maldives (some say Jess is still talking about this). Roars, squeals, aggressive high fives all round in celebration.
15 minutes still left on the clock announced by the umpire, leaving Kim sighing over and over in disbelief.
Dragons continued to put the pressure on and South continued to soak it up. Again, little to no circle entries, and no efforts on goal. With Loopy not making a single save in the second half. The 15 minutes passed and we held out, sharing the points. We’ll take it, but we hope to take all the points at Long Road.
Bury to come next weekend, what will Jan describe this game as?
* I think you’re great, don’t listen to your nightmares
Jenny Soderman
Great work from the defenders, Jenny as designated representative (also good tackles)
