Things did not go as planned in the lead up to the game, with four last minute drop outs, players struggling to park at Latham Road, a missing goalie glove and a tight double for G and Lauren with the L5s. We started the game with 11 on the pitch and no subs while we waited for G to arrive with a GK glove.

It didn’t take us long to get going though with early goals from Nicky and Sophie putting us 2-0 up in the first ten minutes. G then arrived with the GK glove and our keeper May was now safe to save with her left hand. A lovely run down the right from Esther was followed by a lovely cross in with Nicky safely deflected into the Wisbech net to make it 3-0.

An injury to skipper/double-up GKer/glove-fetcher G saw us down to 11 players and defenders Ludo and Ruth taking turns in the midfield. Halftime came and the 6s were buoyed by their 3 goal lead and clean sheet.

The second half started and the defence of Laura, Ludo, Rosie and Lauren remained solid. After all the faff with the GK kit, May was yet to touch the ball. With G off injured, Nicky had to inject and Ruth stepped up to take the strike. A big hit from the top of the D sent the ball bobbling through the circle until it ended up in the bottom left corner. Ruth’s first goal for South and a week after she had a dream about scoring a goal. There were big cheers and celebrations before the 6s returned to concentrating on keeping another clean sheet.

With 15 minutes to go, Wisbech let a pass go past three of their players, not realising Pedzi was behind them ready to pounce. The forward line passed it between themselves until Ruth found herself receiving a rebounded save at the top of the D. In an exact replica of her first goal, she slotted home her second goal.

We retained our clean sheet record and unbeaten streak. Big effort from everyone on the pitch with no subs for most of the game. Things keep getting better and better!
