M3s vs CoP 5s

Jonny Camp

On the back of earning a point against our closest league rivals, Wisbech, in last week’s match, the M3s were well-prepared for the game this weekend. (Possibly?)

Due to the number of home games, availability was strong across the club, and we managed to field a particularly strong team, with depth across the field. We were keen to right the wrongs of our previous meeting with Peterborough at the beginning of the season, as one of our two losses for the season.

Peterborough started the game strongly, repeatedly attacking down the left-hand side, however they were met by the ever-solid defence of Dougie, for which he deservedly bagged himself another man of the match award. After a few shaky minutes, South started to take the game to Peterborough, with multiple close chances including a lovely deflection from Joe W clipping the top of the cross bar. The repeated pressure from Souths attack meant that we won a number of short corners, and it was from one of these Joe W managed to bundle the ball across the line for our first goal (don’t believe his top corner reverse story).

Given the number of shots/near misses and saves in the first half, the team talk at half time focused on the need to play the easy game and pass the ball around the keeper. Early in the second half, South had an opportunity to extend their lead as Oli slipped it to me for an easy tap in. Unfortunately, the resulting missed shot earned me the unanimous lemon vote. Hoping to avoid the votes, I then converted a goal created by George A from a rebound off the post and in the last few minutes of the game latched onto a great pass from Menzies to score and finished the game 3-0 to South.

The result keeps us in 2nd position in the table, however we are rapidly closing in on 1st position and sets us up nicely for the rest of the season.

A special mention has to go to Tom Anns who from his own admission, played a blinding game. Apparently, not missing a single pass or tackle all game.
