Decisions that can change a game

Anne-Marie Bowring

After a pep talk from our coach and captains we started off the game super strong, knowing how much we’d improved from our 4-0 defeat when we last faced City 4s at home. We weren’t going to let scrappy subbing get in the way of what was otherwise a brilliant game. We were intimidating, accurate and fast paced but unfortunately it wasn’t to be, going from a 2-0 lead to a 2-2 draw was disappointing but at least we can see just how much we’ve improved as we really could have won, had certain decisions been made differently. There were three excellent goals from our players. Firstly, a city player falling over left a hole in their defence for an assist by Emma and a goal by Jess (at least our LOM Anne-Marie’s falls didn’t lead to any goals, just some entertainment!) Our second spectacular goal came from some excellent skills by Rhian to dodge several of their players and ping it into the D, which was picked up gracefully by Jess and deflected into goal. I think Jess should try the “distraction technique” more often -  the defensive player was taken completely off guard by a friendly chat just before she scored. Unfortunately, had we had (official) VAR we would have been allowed Rhi’s goal but the glaring sun made it difficult to see where the edge of the D was and despite challenging the decision it was ultimately disallowed :( Such a shame as it was a brilliant goal!
Emily Morris was our POM for excellent first touches, great distribution, speedy down the wing and solid as a brick wall in defence. There were plenty of runners up for POM this week, just showing how well everyone worked as a team. Bring on next week against St Neot’s 2s.
