M2 1-3 Ely City Mens 1

John West

Off the back of a 3 week winning run, the M2s visited Ely for a chance to go 6 points clear of them with only 4 to play. It was a bright day and the home team were already one-ahead in the pre-match mental games, as Stan had to request an orange ball because the pitch was so reflective he could hardly see the provided white ball. The reflectiveness of the pitch was joined by slowness and stickiness, overall being rubbish to play on.

Ely definitely came out stronger, with a few fast players offering their only threats, but they still managed a multitude of shorts and attacking chances. We, on the other hand, had far fewer chances as we struggled putting the passes together, often holding the ball too long and finding flat sticks. However, in a moment mid-half, we managed to string a few passes together which left Ollie in the D facing the keeper. It's still unclear whether it was a wide shot, or an intentional lifted cross, but Ed was there on the far post and knocked it in to make it 1-0 at half time.

After resolving in the team-talk to manage their dangerous players, South did little of this and an unmarked Ely players was allowed in the D and there wasn't much Stan could do to stop their equaliser. On the whole, South looked a fraction less pressured at the back, as the screens stopped wandering into the opposition D, but another counter attack overload led to another unmarked Ely player who had plenty of time and space to wind up a hit to the top corner and made it 2-1 to the hosts. An equaliser from South didn't seem too far away, but after taking the ball on the turn in screen, John sent a risky (& slightly wayward) ball straight to their star player just before the halfway line and Ely made it 3-1. After some threatening play in the last 5 minutes, South still looked like they might get something back, but it unfortunately never came and the game ended 3-1 to Ely
