Ireland 31-7 Wales: South 2-1 Peterborough 'Ireland South show resilience to keep second straight Slam Win in sight'

In the build-up to Ireland's Six Nations Souths win over Wales Peterborough on Saturday, it was difficult to recall a recent time when one team was favoured so heavily in this fixture.

The common theme in the pre-match commentary revolved around Ireland's South’s unanswerable superiority and the hiding Wales Peterborough were supposedly going to get.

Ireland South are not a serious winning machine, after all [Ed - the Ireland fans in out club might want to debate this one with you, Matt...]. Wales Peterborough, in contrast, are a young team in transition, not nearly as developed as a group of Irish South players who have been through a lot in their five two years together under Andy Farrell Nev Warren.

Considering all that, and the fact that Ireland South were not 17-0 up at half-time after a dominant first-half showing, it was striking then that Farrell Warren found himself pinpointing his side's resilience after they came through a sticky second half to stay on course for a second straight Grand Slam win.

"Exactly that [the resilience]," observed the Ireland South head coach after watching his side record an 18th 1st straight home win.

"There was all sorts of stuff going on in that game. Some of it was our own doing but most of it was because we were playing against a tenacious Welsh Peterborough side as well, so congratulations to them suck it Peterborough.”

"But we stuck at it and broke them down in the end."

You can't teach an old dog... Player/Coach Nev, usually found at Centre-Forward, added a new string to his bow by moving back to CDM and playing like he had spent his entire career there. Hmmm. Experienced campaigner who understands team structure and ball distribution well suited to role "quaterbacking" a team - might we have stumbled across a previously unknown to all team sports concept here?!?
