L3 0-5 Cambridge City Ladies 4
Connie PiperAfter a lot of rain, we set foot onto the pitch, ready for anotherday at the office. We went in hopeful, but knew this would be a tough game. According to Tim we were only playing ‘marginally’ better than last week, but we felt it was a big improvement, with lots of triangles and distributing the ball to the screens. However, with the ball staying at our end for lots of the first half and several short corners, they managed to score 2. We kept on fighting and were ready for a comeback going into the second half.
This half of the game was very tense and started with back-to-back short corners lasting about 10 minutes. The defence were on fire and stopped them from scoring, and Lydia (POM) was incredible with her diving saves. But they managed to score 3 more (one of which was a bit controversial as we thought theumpires had stopped play). Ginny sacrificed herself on the line to stop a goal, but unfortunately this resulted in a penalty flick. An awesome save from Lydia prevented another goal, but time was running out for our comeback. We did play some very good hockey and took on Tim’s advice of releasing the ball quickly in the second half. Our communication was great with lots of cheering and support during the short corners. Despite this, we didn’t manage to get in a goal before the whistle blew.
A special mention to Luisa and Ginny, who got votes for POM for their superb defence, but Lydia took the title with her amazing saves. Luisa also got 2 votes for LOM with her little detour to Long Road, but it went to me with my powerful sumo squat which ripped my trousers during the warm-up!
Overall, well played girls – we made it a fight and have lots to be proud of!
