Goals at the end of the rainbow
Lou WalkerOn a stormy day, the L6s ventured to a new location in the brand new and eerily quiet town of Northstowe, to take on Huntingdon & Northstowe development team – the only side to have beaten us in the league before Christmas. Elly had gained some pre-game intel that they weren’t having to use any first team double ups for this fixture, which boosted our confidence (and sounds like good news for their club too). Several players were less than eager to leave the shelter of the changing rooms, but a break in the rain and the appearance of an impressive rainbow seemed like a good time to head out onto the brand new pitch.
South had a strong start to the game, and before long, the excellent Emily had dribbled through the opposition defence, into the D and put the ball into the goal via a defender’s stick. Defenders and midfielders Elly, Ruth, Sarah, Georgia and the Sophies were rock solid, intercepting and blocking the attacks, and sending the ball back up to the right end of the field, via wide midfielders Esther and Lou, and up to the forwards. There was some great movement and passes in from Ava. Nicky was on great form, striking in two more goals and looking very likely to be 6s goal queen for a second season in a row. Emily put in another goal before half time, and we went into the break 4-nil up, with two players on course for hat tricks. Coach Chris and the team were all happy.
The second half went just as well. Emily drove into the opposition D, got round the keeper and shot on target. Lou hit the ball over the line ‘just to make sure’ – adding another goal to South’s tally but denying Emily’s hat trick – sorry! (This theft was probably more lemon-worthy than skipping teas to avoid an extra 3 mile cycle!). A brilliant strike from Nicky sealed her hat trick and made it 6 nil. For the final goal, Lou took the ball into the D and aimed towards the post where Nicky was well positioned, but it bounced straight into the goal.
Poor Emma didn’t get much action in the goal, but we’re all very glad you were there, and hope you got a bit more action with the 5s! Shout out to May, who was out of action due to a cycling mishap, but braved the cold and rain to cheer us on – true team spirit!
