New Year, new us

Vicki Georgiadis

New Year, new us, and buoyed by the healthy numbers of people at training in the deluge on
Thursday evening, sticks and masks still soggy from the rain, we were feeling good about meeting
the Saint Neots L3s to blow away the cobwebs and hopefully get our first 2024 victory. Everything
boded well, and proudly sporting my new Christmas skort, I could hardly wait to get going.
It went so well – the mids, Fi, Hayley, G, and Harry, consistently managed to get the ball up to the D
and the forwards valiantly aimed it at the goal, with some near misses from Sarah and Polly, earning
several short corners; the ball was mainly in our half with Rebecca, Lauren, Ellie, Lizzie and Claire,
mopping up the occasional break, but we struggled to get the ball over the line before half-time.
After a short half-time pep-talk, we improved vastly, controlling the game better, and spreading the
ball out more. We looked more like a winning side, and were rewarded by 2 goals in the second half
– Helen with a text-book strike on goal (earning her POM), and Avi, putting another one away nicely,
making us feel more secure. The only problem was that they got one too, or was it two – who
knows – there seemed to be confusion about what was a goal and what wasn’t, and even what the
final score was. Turns out it was 2-2 – yes, Harry, we drew, not lost – nearly LOM-worthy, but you
were pipped to the post by Lizzie needing a little time out mid-game for letting herself be
magnetically attracted to staying close to the match-ball.
We’ll get them next time with a little bit more pressure and the magic to turn our efforts into more
goals – bring on the next game!
