A well fought point

Josh Rollason

The first game back of the new year saw South up against a newly formed Cambridge City 7s team (that basically consisted of their previous City 6s team) who were raring to prove themselves for being in the running for the top of the table.

I’ll start with the fact that I believe we can all forget how challenging it is to be an umpire and that decisions were at least consistent throughout the match. Thanks again chaps, and that’s all I’ll say on the subject.

The match was fast-paced from the first whistle, and City were quick on the draw to score a goal within the first few minutes of play, catching South still sleeping. A continuation of their clinical play earned City another goal in quick succession, making the score 2-0 within the first 15 minutes of play.

South began to come alive at this point, and some strong accurate passing through the middle of the pitch from Jordan and Andy created pressure on their opponents D with the first goal for South coming from Jordan. This reminded South that they were certainly capable of testing City’s defensive line. Building on from this goal, the team were able to solidify the formation and some excellent link up play resulted in a short corner being awarded with an excellent finish from James making the score 2-2 at the end of the first half.

The less said about the second half the better. Some outstanding work from the defensive line, with Martin making some cracking tackles and outstanding saves from keeper Matt definitely ensured the scoreline remained as it was. Finally, what a performance from Gabe in the midfield on his debut match for the 4s, rightfully earning him POM.

The game was on a knife edge throughout and the end result really could have gone either way, but I think both teams were satisfied to come out with a draw.

LOM – Josh for slipping and sliding around the pitch, as well as attacking a man before proceeding to steal his stick.

POM – Gabe for an excellent debut performance

Slide-tackle stick heist.
