vs St Ives 2s
Naomi GibsonIt was a slip week for most teams but not the L4s.
This week the L4s traveled to St Ives to face one of our neighbours. St Ives was sitting close to the top of the league table, so we knew it was going to be a tricky match. However, we were ready, the slow sand pitch wasn’t going to stop us.
The first halftime of the match felt pretty even, with South having the majority of the possession at first. However, St Ives got their first goal in this half and were bursting with energy. They definitely kept us on our toes and their practice of running to meet the ball on the sand pitch was definitely evident. Although, South fought hard and ran their socks off making half time a welcome break.
At half time the score was 1-0 to St Ives. We had an encouraging half time talk and planning our tactics and snacking on what I thought were the best Haribos ever! You can’t beat the sour lightening bolts!
Anyway back to the hockey. The second half was tough and was full of short corners. St Ives had three in a row at one point, all of which were saved and cleared perfectly by our defence. With a notable goal line save from El! When the score quickly became 2-0 South began to feel a little disheartened but we pushed on and kept fighting.
Our midfield did well to hold off St Ives fast breaks from their 16s with brilliant runs from Liv and Amelia. Then came our moment! A moment that in my memory feels a little bit frantic, most likely because I wasn’t paying attention and before I knew it we had the ball in the D and all the forwards were giving everything they had to score. Thankfully, our efforts were not in vain and Emily secured a super goal taking the ball from the goalie’s feet and placing it in the goal behind her.
This spurred St Ives on, they held their positions very well and seemed to be everywhere. Leading two more goals for them both from short corners.
The time seemed to fly by and it was very quickly the last minute of the game and boy it was a thriller! With the pressure high, South managed to win a short moments before the final whistle. As we gathered to discuss a plan the final whistle went and the tension grew. Everyone moved up, we were not going to let this opportunity pass.
St Ives had their marks on ready to run, South were in position … with a speedy injection from Naomi to Alex who made an impressive and ideal strike from the top of the D straight past the goalie! The bang on the back board was music to our ears.
POM was awarded to Amelia for her coverage of the pitch and leading runs.
LOM was jointly awarded to Nicole for her well intended but comical ice-pack delivery and Naomi for her seagull like scream after passing the ball to absolutely no one.
