10 player, 10 goals, it’s a Moo point!
Fi WrightIt was a sunny day in Cambridge and we were feeling positive, despite lots of late drop outs meaning we had no subs, because upon counting, Haverhill only had 9 players. Pictures later provided, showed half their team on a hen do, dressed as cows in Yorkshire (Fi initially asked if they were dalmatians - as if that made more sense), we didn’t delve into “why cows?” What happens in Yorkshire stays there I guess!
We nearly lost COWptain Elly before the match, when she punched herself in the face whilst avidly gesticulating, during pre game story-telling time, bringing tears to her eyes. But luckily she rallied (LOM nom 1).
We started strong and managed to hit the back of Haverhills goal within the first 5 minutes, when a cracking hit by Charlotte from outside the D, hit the post rebounding into the waiting stick of Esther, who slotted it round the keeper nicely. UDDERLY brilliant.
One brings two as they say and after 5 more minutes, Charlotte did a legenDAIRY strike to hit the backboard again.
We were very pleased to be 2-0 up after ten minutes and were giving ourselves a nice COW-pat on the back, until poor Kea tripped in the D and sadly had to sit out the rest of the game.
We were now down to ten players, but still had the UDDER hand we felt!
It was then Fi’s turn to drive down the baseline and BULLdoze one past the keeper, followed by Nicole being an imMOOvable force of persistence to slot in our 4th.
We were MOOving the ball around well with wing backs Amelia and Vicki, creating beautiful channels down the lines.
Elly and Rosie in defence were MOOping up the RARE breakthrough that Haverhill made and Sélène kept her eyes on the ball, to make a couple of great saves to keep that sheet nice and clean.
Esther made the opposition COWer in fear again by scoring the 5th of the first half!
Only a few minutes into the 2nd half, Ruth positioned herself beautifully to make a COWculated strong strike, which ricocheted into the goal to make sure all the forwards and midfield had a goal to their name!
Then the rest was just a numbers game, now we had the winning forMOOLa: Esther scoring two more goals in quick succession to bring her total to four (and earning her POM of the MOOtch), Fi adding a second to her COWnt and Charlotte converting a short COWner to a goal to bring her tally to two also!
The game COWdn’t finish without some drama, with a Haverhill player grabbing Elly’s stick during a tackle leading to a very Eastenders exchange “she’s got my stick, get outta my club”, which earnt Haverhill a short corner, for our (Elly’s) dissent (LOM nom 2).
However despite Elly’s Lemon miSTEAKS, she was ultimately out Lemoned by Nicole, who shouted out the attacking short corner plan, louder than an atomic bomb for all to hear - surprisingly we didn’t score from that one!
Everyone was over the MOOn at our result, a great starting base and some excellent play to continue to build our season’s campaign and knowing that we have some tough matches coming up, this was a good game to have a great score in!!
May the COWS be ever in your favour!
