an honourable silver medal

John Greaves

Peterborough in the drizzle; given the run around by a cadre of super skillful youngsters ably guided by wily wrinklies. We know how to live.  It's all part of our "development" in M7s, which also included 3 guests from the home squad to get us up the regulation 11. Thank you Alistair, Brian and Neil.

Pre-match PE routine led by Mr Motivator Talmage and our now customary 2+3+2+3 formation were not enough to distract Peterborough from opening the scoring with a straightforward "let's outnumber them in their D" move. An inspired change of tactic involved wing back Andy Thomas racing up into the opposition area to take a Wilco cross in his stride, pivot gracefully, and slotting the ball into goal for the equaliser.

This only spurred the home hordes on to give us a geometry lesson in passing triangles ending in a simple goal past the unfortunate and consistently excellent (and deserved MoM) Neil Webb in goal. Half time 2-1 to Peterborough

During the break one of the many Bartons playing rallied the troops, only to watch a 4 yr old (OK 14) waltz up the pitch to score a brilliant solo effort for 3-1 shortly into the second half

Time for some vintage M7s play...

Star left winger Jessie Diggins, a threat throughout against much bigger defenders, crossed to a Barton who deftly crossed to a lurking Greaves. He pirouetted like Tinkerbell(?!) to thrash the ball into goal just inside the post from a tight angle. When told of this Mrs Greaves afterwards only asked "did you injure yourself?" Its all about perspective.

Peterborough grabbed the final goal, using at least three shooting attempts to do so from a short corner. 4-2

Ah Well. All 3 Bartons (including the 2 guests who borrowed Rob's spare shirts) played a full part as did the whole M7s team; never giving up; trying to play wisely; passing well; harrying those pesky Peterborough yoofs and encouraging each other

It wasnt quite enough, but it was fun and gives plenty of hope for the rest of the season

We wish James P, and has dodgy LoM-worthy ear (for keeping James ot of the game) a speedy recovery

Well actually James Parsley's ear. Bit harsh. Get well soon!
