L4s vs St.Ives 2s

Bex Williscroft

South were well rested after the week off and ready for their game back against St.Ives. From the first whistle, the opposition created a couple of early chances, but South’s solid defensive shape absorbed the pressure and cleared the danger effectively. Both teams looked well-organised, and it’s clear that breaking through the press will require sharp, precise passing.

A phenomenal run up the right led to South’s first shot, but the direct strike didn’t hit the mark this time. POM Meg started brilliantly with some impressive runs and interceptions, while Lou was also solid, cutting out key passes with great positional awareness. Ellie made an outstanding tackle during a dangerous 4-vs-2 situation, cleaning up at the back and keeping South in control.

It’s evident there’s been a huge improvement in the team’s passing, positional awareness, and collective pressing. A disciplined side like the opposition has struggled to break through, and South will be hoping to keep up this momentum. All that’s missing is that decisive final pass to break the deadlock. South has been the stronger side as we head into halftime, 0-0, with some great chances created.

However, the second half started with a setback as the opposition took the lead with a ball that slipped through to the back post for a 0-1 scoreline. South seemed to lose their rhythm briefly, defaulting to high balls that the opposition easily dealt with. It was time to get back to quick, accurate passing!

The pressure mounts, and unfortunately, it’s 0-2 as South struggles to find a way through. But there’s still time for a comeback. Suddenly, El makes a dazzling run through the center, sending a perfectly-timed ball to Kendra, who finishes it off to make it 1-2. There’s still hope, but South needs to act fast.

Ultimately, it’s tough walking off the pitch as the better side but on the wrong side of the result. St. Ives defended superbly, and taking the lead made things even more challenging. There’s a lot to be proud of from South—a promising performance to build on. On to the next game!
