Proving the 'eyeball test'

Luisa Ciampi

We gathered at St Mary's on a cold November morning ready to face one of the strongest teams in the league -
Newmarket 1s.

Primed with a team talk from El Captino Steph, several pointers from Coach Ed, and a full team with THREE subs, we ventured on the pitch for a warm up.

We lost the toss but this was not an indicator of things of come. The first half of the game was a little bit of magic where we had most of the possession - surprising Newmarket and our fans on the side.

The mid fielders Louisa P, Erin and Emily did a fab job intercepting and channeling any players and balls that came their way.

Harry and Grace did an excellent job of covering and distributing as the back line Annabel, Lucy, Louisa W, and Luisa stepped early to tackle, and Solid Selene saved a couple of great shots on goal.

Our front liners Steph, Mo, Beth and Katy B (with her shiny new teeth!) had some awesome runs on several breakaways, and a couple of run ins with the Newmarket Goalie.

As half time rolled around we were sitting pretty on 0 - 0. We had rattled Newmarket 1s and we intended to keep it that way.

The second half not only did we keep up our fab team play despite the scary hits and odd ariel from Newmarket, but Beth scored a beautiful goal in the 70th minute!

In the 74th minute, I discovered the player I was marking had played a key role in my facial stiches last season, which resulted in me getting lime (lack of lemons in the supermarket) of match for being too friendly with the opposition in the crucial last 3 minutes - fair.

Our team work today showed in the POM votes, where almost everyone in the team got a vote, but Harry took home the title (and is owed a bag of sweets!) for solid and tenacious mid feild play.

As Jan's report said - I think today we proved the eyeball test ...
