Wet and Windy Win

Freya Lockwood

Once again I’m writing to you on a very windy, rainy day (storm darragh decided to pay us a visit) why we picked a winter sport I do not know.

A day full of surprises, Connie decided she can’t be having her last game for us ending in a loss, so came back for one last try. Maegan also decided that playing hockey in a storm was far better than attempting to take a train to Cardiff.

Our oppo today, Pelicans 1s, 3 places and 3 points above us in the league, we knew it would’ve a tough one. Captain Rhi set out her battle plan, and it seemed to sink in, even though many of us were probably thinking about how drunk we were going to get at the social later.

Pelis strike first to make it 1-0, a clinical short corner. But we didn’t let our heads drop and quickly equalised with a fabulous reverse effort from Liv. Back level and spirits high, we were pushing for a second. The link up play was awesome (and very aesthetically pleasing to watch from the back). However all our efforts did not quite pay off, and it ended up being pelis that broke the deadlock, making it 2, then quickly 3-1. The motivation of going to the social with a win kept us going, especially Liv, who bagged another, followed by Amelia’s thrilling 1v1 goal. 3-3 at the break, the comeback nearly complete.

With Livs wise words of ‘pretend it’s nil all’ at half time, we started the second half with the same intensity as we did in the first. Pelis were clearly rattled by us, maybe they underestimated our abilities. Blink and you miss it, Zoë nets 2 in 2mins! Her first goals for south, making a big claim to avoid lemon this week. Rhi, despite her best efforts, could not help having a mid-half sit down (even though she was defending poor Beth, who was being attacked left right and centre by pelican stick tackles). 5-3 up and loving life, pelis did manage to score another one of their clinical short corners to make it 5-4, but south held strong and secured the W.

POM was especially tough this week, with almost every player getting a vote (a complete nightmare for me to keep tally of). It eventually went to Zoë, whose bid to avoid lemon paid off. LOM went to none other than captain Rhi, I think we’d be genuinely concerned at this point if there was a match where she didn’t take a tumble!). Special mention to Connie for falling over in the warm up too.

What a lovely way to end the first half of the season! We’re probably all severely hungover right now, reminiscing this fantastic win. Hoping to carry this energy into the 2nd half of the season!!
