L6 1-7 St Ives Ladies 3
Lou WalkerIt was a dark and stormy morning. The early arrivals huddled outside in the rain, having been wrongly convinced by Sammy that the changing room door was locked. The L6s had 11 players this week, an improvement on last week’s 8. There was some concern as to whether the ‘big storm’ would scupper our game plans, but it takes more than a bit of wind and rain to spoil our hockey fun. It was a great team performance, with players keeping their positions well and communicating. St Ives got two early goals in, and had what seemed like hundreds of short corners. We kept out most of the short corners, with some off the line clearances by the defenders, and more amazing saves by super keeper Pedzi. One of these short corners found its way in via poor Lottie’s knee – the goal was swiftly discounted as it was above backboard height, but the lump was there to stay, and with no subs, Lottie battled on heroically to keep clearing the ball out of the D time and again. There was some great linking between Sammy, Lottie and Josie on the right, and Lou, Freya and Sophie on the left. Molly and Rosie were showing great energy in midfield, powering through the opposition. Sophie L was working her socks off on the wing, always in a great position to receive the ball. Alice was also making some great runs, despite battling a hangover (earning her both a PoM and a LoM vote!). We made much better use of our width on defensive hit-outs. As the scoreline increased in St Ives favour, South never gave up, and eventually pushed into the D for Nicky to add another goal to her, and our tally, for which she gained a couple of well-deserved PoM nominations. Former South player Nicky P had the last word, sneaking in a final goal for the visitors shortly before the whistle.
Lots of positives to take away from this game, and a good L6 turnout at the club Xmas party –big thank you to our fantastic social secs Tim and Hannah for putting on a great night.
