Nothing to see here

The omens were bad before it began. The team sheet, at first brimming with estimable names, grew sparser and sparser as illustrious leader Danny and forward stalwart James tragically succumbed to illness. Ali was also not there.

So we arrived depleted on that crisp January morning in beautiful Ely, still ready and raring for a run around on what appeared to be a freshly wetted patch of fake lawn. The first half was a tense back and forth battle - Ely scoring first, South equalising, Ely scoring again, Will levelling the score back up (he's not very good is he, can we have him next week as well).

Soon after this, recognising the immense threat of the South forward line, one of the Ely players ran into me and broke my glasses (how lemony of me). I wish I could tell you what happened for the rest of the game but it was all a blur. My glasses were definitely taped back together in time to see Jack do a signature spinny thing and score a third goal, so call it 3-2 to us? Not sure we can get away with denying reality two weeks in a row.

Ely put out a strong team, clearly with high availability given Ely 1s were meant to be playing Cambridge South 3s (who?). Multiple South players picked up some kind of injury during the game, so 10/10 for perseverance - all that remains is to work out how to not ship four goals in ten minutes during the second half.
