The Return of the Dragon Slayers

Daniel Galantini

As the echoes of the South shout died away, Rob Barton’s side steeled themselves for a action-packed, energising game against the fearsome Bourne Deeping (development side). As the whistle pierced the frigid air, South immediately pushed up, pressing the Dragons time and time again, keeping the ball mostly in the opposition half.
This pressure paid off, with a strike from Dan Galantini from the top of the D getting a wonderful deflection by Harry S for South’s first goal.

1-0

South kept up the relentless pressure, with passion galore keeping the Dragons at bay, and once more South cracked the Bourne defence, this time Rob B deflecting it in.

2-0

At the sound of the restart whistle, the untiring South side ran and ran and ran, with excellent play up and down the whole wing by MoM James Morrison. Yet again, South capitalised on Deeping’s flagging defence, this time Dexter S (minus a pair of glasses) putting one away.

3-0

Unfortunately, an injury for Dan T ended his game, and forced South to play without a sub for the remainder of the game.

Before long, the half-time whistle blew, and, after a refreshing break, an exhilarated South side took to the pitch again, hoping to repeat the successes of the first half.

Sure enough, Rob showed his finesse with another quick strike from the top of the D, further increasing South’s lead.

4-0

However, thanks (at least in part) to the lack of a certain James P, Bourne managed to slip past South’s previously impenetrable defence, bringing one back for the Dragons.

4-1

Encouraged by this apparent increase in form, the Dragons pressed forward again, and once more cracked the South back line, giving Deeping a much-needed morale boost.

4-2

Despite this slight setback, and Harry B seemingly playing on ice skates, South stepped it up a gear, and, with renewed vigour, drove the ball into the Dragon’s D. This time, centre-mid Jordan W came up and calmly cracked another one past the Bourne keeper.

5-2

Spurred on by this success, South continued to hound the Dragons, denying them pass after run after aerial. The renewed pressure inevitably broke into the Deeping D for the final time, with Simon Jelley tapping it in on the near post.

6-2

After a final few minutes of play, the final whistle blew, and an exhausted, albeit jubilant, South side ambled off the pitch, itching for a healthy dose of pizza to reward them for their fine work this Saturday afternoon.

He was up and down the wing like a sparrowhawk having an airborne dogfight!
