Finally, a bearable temperature and some sunshine! The day is off to a great start, and with a full squad, our hopes of securing some points were high.

Playing Cambridge uni, no matter which team, is always a challenge. The reverse fixture at the start of the season ended 0-0, and we knew that they only get better as the season progresses. But nevertheless, we started the game with our usual attacking flare, testing the goalkeeper within the first few mins. Uni matched us pass-for-pass, and despite all our time in their D, we couldn’t quite convert, despite the goal line clearance for Daisy’s shot and Rhi letting one fly, going just over the top. As the half progressed, the game became more even, and uni had a fair few shots of their own, goalkeeper Lu make some cracking saves, and the defensive line of held strong. The breakthrough was unfortunately in the favour of uni, who slotted home a rebound 10mins from HT.

Conceding the goal seemed to kick us into gear, and we started the 2nd half with the same intensity as we did in the first. A few agonisingly close calls, Liv and Jess pulling the strings in midfield and putting great balls into the box, but could not quite be converted. The uni keeper made a handful of great saves, keeping her team in it. The last 10mins of the half were dominated by uni, pushing for a second. The whole team put an absolute shift in to keep the score 1-0, the marking and communication was top tier, Maegan eventually resorted to lying on the goal line to keep uni out (we love the dedication). 

1-0 defeat. A close call, and definitely could’ve gone either way. Still, a very enjoyable game in the sunshine! MOM was shared between Hayley (for putting a fabulous shift in at screen) and Freya (for excellent defensive work). LOM also went to Freya, for trying to assassinate Rhi with a hit out (oops) 

We look to next week for our long trip to Kettering, but hopefully we’ll be bringing points back with us!
