L4s V St Neots 2

Becky Donaldson

After last week’s victory over previously unbeaten Ely 1s, the L4s came into this weekend’s match full of confidence and energy. We had a good mini-crowd of support including Coach Nev and optimism was in the air – how different from the start of the season!
St Neots 2 started strong, pressing us closely and making some good runs. But we quickly adjusted to the pace and put our training into practice by fighting for every ball. Claudia and Esther created some great chances, but nothing was quite going our way.
Solid goalkeeping by Lou R and defensive work (shout out to Avi, who really can play anywhere!) kept the score at 0-0 in the first half.
The second half saw us pile on the pressure and winning, many, many short corners. Safe to say, that’s what we’ll be practicing at the next few training sessions as small errors in each one kept a goal just out of sight. St Neots managed to break through with some quick passes and we went a goal down.
Undeterred, our midfielders kept running and running; creating chances on goal and getting back to help defend. We kept the pressure up, but got unlucky when a ball turned over unexpectedly, leading to a short corner, leading to the ball coming off a stick into someone’s body, leading to a penalty flick, leading to a goal. The game ended 2-0.
Despite the score it was another showcase of just how far the L4s have come this season. POM went to Lou C for great play in the middle. Naomi made a good attempt at LOM for being late due to spilling “chicken juice” down her trousers on the way here. Nonetheless, LOM went to Kendra for cheering for City… Cheer for them all you want Kendra, the L4s are not letting you go, you're ours now!
