M4 2-2 Cambridge City Mens 4
Phil MarriottThe M4s went into this week's match on a high from last weekend's win, hoping to carry that momentum into the local derby. City turned up wanting to leave their mark on the South players, which resulted in them finding themselves reduced to 9 at one point in the first half. South had evidently not been expecting such a situation (I blame the coach for focussing on short corners instead) meaning they were unfortunately unable to capitalise on this man advantage. But South were in the game (which is more than can be said about the result last time these two sides met...) and had much of the possession going forward, until one run away break lead to a 1-0 lead to City.
But South kept fighting, turning to the "muscle" at the back to put pressure onto City. All the great teams have the tough player. Manchester United's Roy Keane, New Zealand's Richie McCaw, Gladiator's Wolf. Cambridge South now have a new, unexpected, contender to sit alongside such players. Phil Marriott may not appear the obvious choice to play the enforcer role, but his, shall we say "no nonsense", defending earnt him a lemon coloured card.
City, however, were clearly rattled by this display of strength (in the author's unbiased opinion), and finally conceded an equaliser to star centre forward Tom Anns, meaning the sides went in level at the break.
After the flurry of cards in the first half, things calmed down in the second half, with South again playing much of the game in the opposition's half. A sustained City attack, however, led to a 2-1 lead for the home side. Undeterred, South kept the pressure up, finally earning the equaliser from the stick of Ash Krishnan.
The game ended with the points shared. A last minute attempt by Shin Kim to seriously injure any teammate in the path of a high flying hit clearance wasn't enough to take the Lemon vote away from Phil Marriott, and Jordan Bennett's work rate in midfield made him the runaway winner of the MoM vote.
